Opening Porter’s Lodge on Green Byondis Campus

19 September 2022

The time has come: the new entrance to the green Byondis Campus in Nijmegen has been opened! It was a festive opening last September 16, during which owner and ‘Chairman of the Byondis Board’ Jacques Lemmens, PhD, reflected on the development Byondis has gone through in recent years and the sustainable plans for the future. Together with building partners and future users, we attended this festive moment.

Byondis is an innovative biopharmaceutical research and development company that develops drugs against cancer and autoimmune diseases. Concern for people’s well-being is in the organization’s DNA and this is reflected in the company’s green campus. Since 2008, Broekbakema has been working on the urban master plan and Byondis’ buildings on this green campus. The new Porter’s Lodge marks the entrance to this special area.

Broekbakema provided the building and interior design and, in collaboration with Ontwerpbureau StaLa, designed and elaborated the entrance area. A strong collaboration with the client and building partners created a multifunctional entrance with space for meeting and sharing knowledge. The building also fits the sustainable goals of Byondis. The Porter’s Lodge is a gas-free, Nearly Energy Neutral (BENG) building with a full PV canopy, efficient air-to-heat pump, highly insulated facade and use of thermal mass.

Some sustainability elements are visible on the exterior of the Porter’s Lodge. For example, the characteristic canopy is covered with some 162 solar panels. With these, Byondis generates about 58,320 kWh per year. A wonderful yield that contributes to the organization’s sustainable goals.

This new entrance to the green Byondis Campus suits the Byondis of today and tomorrow. We congratulate Byondis on this milestone!
