Terneuzen Town Hall Officially Designated a National Monument
17 June 2026
Last Friday, Terneuzen Town Hall was officially granted the status of a Dutch national monument. It is a special milestone for the municipality, but also for us.
The town hall was designed in the late 1960s (1964–1972) by Jaap Bakema, one of the predecessors of our firm. For some time now, we have once again been involved with the building. Together with the Municipality of Terneuzen, we are working on the sustainability upgrades and reprogramming of the town hall.
This recognition makes our involvement even more meaningful. While the building is being acknowledged as an important piece of heritage, we are helping shape the next chapter of its existence.
Our colleagues Aldo and Marius attended the official presentation of the monument plaque by the Dutch Cultural Heritage Agency (Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed) to Alderman Jeroen de Buck.
The monument designation confirms the architectural and cultural-historical significance of the town hall. For us, it is above all a reminder that well-designed buildings can serve generations, provided that we continue to invest in their future.
To be continued.
