Pilot factory for photonic chips designed in 10 weeks

17 July 2025

From vision to design for a pilot factory that will put the Netherlands on the world map in just 10 weeks?
A considerable challenge, but certainly not impossible with co-creation and a carefully assembled team of experts.

Construction of this new cleanroom facility will start this year at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven. Together with client High Tech Campus, user TNO, and the team of consultants from Deerns and Tielemans, we are joining forces to come up with a well-thought-out and future-oriented design.

This factory will enable the industrial-scale production of photonic chips based on indium phosphide (InP). InP photonic chips use light to transmit data and are distinguished by their extremely compact size thanks to a high degree of integration. With their high speed, low energy consumption, and large bandwidth, they improve the performance of data centers and enable new generations of smart devices.

They also play a key role in applications such as artificial intelligence, 6G networks, medical diagnostics, and defense systems. That is why photonic chips are considered one of the most important technologies for the future.

Functionality and flexibility are central to the building design. The design focuses on future-proofing, a phased cleanroom, and maximum reliability, realized within a short timeframe and with a focus on cost efficiency.

These chips are also of strategic importance to the Netherlands: they increase Europe’s technological independence and create innovative and economic opportunities for companies in the high-tech sector.

It is special for the design team to contribute to a building that will help shape the technological future of the Netherlands and Europe.
