ABN AMRO Transformation: From Existing to Future-Proof

31 March 2026

Since 2020, we have been collaborating with EDGE Technologies, BAM Bouw en Techniek, and ABN AMRO on the sweeping transformation of the headquarters on Foppingadreef in Amsterdam. What once began as an ambition on paper is now becoming a reality step by step: the building is visibly evolving into a sustainable and future-proof headquarters.

A new heart of wood

In the entrance area, the wooden “V-columns” and “Y-columns” are now fully visible. Together, they form the heart of the building, which already has a warm, inviting atmosphere. The main staircases are more than just functional elements: they encourage interaction and will soon form the spatial heart of the office.

In building section D, the new timber construction has been completed, including an atrium with a sawtooth façade made from reused climate ceilings. This immediately conveys the atmosphere and ambition of the design.

Circular and Biobased Construction in Practice

In this redevelopment, renovation and circularity go hand in hand. Old window frames are given a second life as an atrium facade, mounted on a biobased wooden structure. Inside the atria, climate ceilings have been repurposed. This creates a building in which existing qualities are enhanced and new additions seamlessly blend with the original character.

A Milestone Reached

In October, the project reached its highest point, a significant milestone in one of Europe’s largest office renovations. In total, more than 100,000 m² is being renovated, including approximately 30,000 m² of vertical and infill extensions. The building is now wind- and watertight, and the contours of the design are clearly visible.

Moving toward the future

In the coming months, we will continue to work on the interior design, landscaping, and the further integration of circular economy measures. Every detail brings the building closer to its final form and makes the ambition of a sustainable, flexible, and inspiring work environment tangible.
